Empty Warnings?

Tensions are rising between China and the US because of Nancy Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan. China has stated that they will “not sit idly by” if the US House Speaker ever tries to visit Taiwan. However, Pelosi’s trip only mentions stops in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. There were no official mentions of a Taiwan visit.

Nevertheless, the White House claims that Pelosi has the right to visit Taiwan. If Pelosi’s visit goes through, she will be the first US House Speaker to visit Taiwan since 1997.

China thinks her visit would send encouragement to the pro-independence side of the country. In a recent phone call between the Chinese and US leaders, Xi Jinping warned Joe Biden that those who play with fire perish by it.
