Even The Smallest Atomic Bomb Is Bigger Than “Mt. Everest”

We live in a day and age when everyone seems to have the word “nuclear” on the tip of their tongues. With North Korea, China, Russia and the United States at odds to name a few countries, tensions are high on the global scale and we as citizens of the world fear a nuclear war might be imminent. 

Don’t you worry though as this animation, although scary, will show you why that will probably never happen.  Here’s why.

Deterrence theory came about during the Cold War, more specifically in the 50s. 

According to the latest studies, there are about 9,000 nuclear bombs at the ready around the world. There are about 6,000 more in various stages of degradation as well but could be made functional if needed. Having said that, we as a civilization have the ability to destroy our planet many times over especially because of the sheer power some of these bombs have. 

To showcase this point, the video below will put into perspective how far that explosive power has come from the first two bombs (and the only ones) being dropped during World War II to the most powerful ones we have today. 

For solace, know that these very destructive bombs which are in the thousands in terms of quantity are all a part of nuclear deterrence. This means all the superpowers of the world have adopted the military policy of ” the promise of retaliation and possibly mutually assured destruction (MAD).” This ensures nobody will ever use them unless we want our species to die out. It’s really that simple.
