Europe’s Turboprop Airlifter

The Airbus A400M is a European tactical airlifter designed to replace the C-160 and the C-130 Hercules. A400Ms can carry more than the Hercules while having the ability to land and take off using rough landing strips. 

A Short Amount

The 148ft long aircraft only needs 3,215ft of space for takeoffs and 2,530ft for landings.

Powerful Engines

Four Europrop TP400-D6 turboprop engines power the aircraft. Each of these producing a whopping 11,000hp!

Engine Advantages

It should be noted that the A400M’s propeller engines are considered more efficient than reaction engines, albeit not as fast. The former can fly longer with the same amount of fuel and are easier to handle on the ground. 

Perfect Fit

Its engines also have better climb performance and shorter landings – perfect for shorter runways. Turboprop engines like the ones used in A400Ms can get all of these advantages for the cost of a lower top speed and altitude ceiling.
