5. Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa

The land-based tactical fighter was operated by the second highest flying ace of Japan. Lt. Col. Satoru Anabuki flew the 29ft long fighter and scored 39 official victories.

4. Kawanishi N1K-J Shiden

Kaneyoshi Muto was the most famous pilot of the Shiden. Muto had 34 confirmed kills and is credited with approaching 12 Hellcats alone. He shot four of them down before retreating.

Major Teruhiko Kobayashi of the 244th Sentai achieved five kills using the Hien while defending the Japanese islands.
